There's a reason the saying 'basics are best,' exists. It's more than a simple cliche, it's the truth!
Think of 'basics' as the supporting actors in your wardrobe that work with everything. They provide you with endless outfit combinations and also pair well with your unique stand-out pieces.
Basics are the ultimate weapon to building the perfect mix and match, effortless wardrobe. Once you have the appropriate building blocks, you'll be able to create any look with ease.
What are Basics?
First, let’s define 'basics.' There are many opinions on what constitutes a basic. They're often lumped together with wardrobe must-haves or essentials, but they aren't exactly the same. And that's an important distinction.
All basics are essential, but not all essentials are basics.
'Basics' are your simple, totally predictable pieces, in neutral or safe colors and silhouettes that complement everything.
And if you're wondering, “well I have all of those things, so why isn’t my wardrobe coming together?’. Then you need to understand the importance of great basics.
In order for a basic to be great, it needs to be all of the things mentioned above–simple, predictable, complements everything–but it also needs to complement you, fit you well, and be in good condition. Most people have a plain white tee in their wardrobe, but a lot don’t have a plain white tee that fits well, isn't stretched out, and hasn't worn out. That’s the key difference.
Here are a few of my top picks right as now favorite basics.
1. A COTTON TEE
2. A Cozy Pullover Sweater
3. A Neutral Tank
4. A BABY TEE
5. RIBBED-KNIT TANK
Why are Basics so Important?
It’s important to have adequate basics in your wardrobe and/or upgrade your current basics to have both form and function. Form is about how things look. Function is about how things work.
Basics are about function. Perhaps you're experiencing a "jam" in your wardrobe. If you feel you have a ton of clothes but you're not wearing most of them, take a deeper look to see how to free those pieces from the shackles of going unworn. For example, say you have a lot of cute jackets but nothing to wear under them. A simple, predictable, well-fitting tee will free those jackets from the un-wearable jail and you'll clear the "jam."
Great Basics are about form. The more simple the piece, the better condition and fit it needs to have. Condition and quality make the biggest impact in your basics. This is one reason jeans and a white tee can look like a million bucks or can look frumpy and outdated. Great basics elevate things, bad basics bring them down. So if you have a closet that has fun, stylish, standout pieces, but they always feel off, take a deeper look into your basics. Check the quality, check the fit and be sure to upgrade if needed.
